Mill Creek Anchorage

As is Annapolis Boat Show tradition, a frantic mass exodus brought the final day's activity to an exciting and speedy end. We managed to escape the outer docks ahead of the chaos and found a lovely anchorage in Mill Creek where we holed up for a few days of shooting with master photographer Billy Black (Billy's stunning photos coming very soon). 

We spent our final days in Annapolis sailing FLASH and MINNEHAHA together side-by-side with judges for the Sailing World and Cruising World Boat of the Year competitions as well as other press and prospects.

We had an incredible show at this year's Annapolis Boat Show and, over the 5 days we were there, saw more than a thousand visitors come aboard to view our two boats! 

This year we were proud to have for the first time, two catamarans at a show with HH66-05 FLASH making her international debut alongside the beautiful HH55-01 MINNEHAHA.

It was a busy, eventful and all in all very successful week and we want to thank the event organisers for once again putting on a great boat show.

Shows Over! Au Revoir Côte d’Azur.

Even though the French Air Traffic Controllers were on strike, that didn't stop the crowds making it out to Cannes this year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Yachting Festival. The sun shone bright and boy did the wind blow. With gusts of over 28 knots, it was certainly hold on to your hats weather!

R-Six returned to Cannes, where last year she made her international debut. This year she arrived fresh off the back of her impressive performance at the RORC Rolex Fastnet Race where she took second place in the multihull class, although by now we have come to expect nothing less of Team R-Six, such is their remarkable race record this past year.

The Cannes Yachting Festival itself went well and HH66-01 R-Six once again stood out from the crowd, impressing all who came on board with her spacious interiors, exquisite finishing and lets not forget those awesome clear-coat carbon hulls. In the year and a half since her launch she has developed quite a following with many visitors recognising her from various regattas and articles that she has featured in, and who were excited to have the opportunity to come on board and take a look around.

For everyone at here HH Catamarans, we had renewed pride for this incredible yacht and it was an honour to have her back in Cannes again and to have received so much praise.

Minnehaha Stuns at Newport

HH55-01 Minnehaha was a definite crowd pleaser over the weekend at the Newport International Boat Show. Show-goers marveled at her wide open spaces, intelligent storage and and luxurious finish. Exclamations of "wow", "amazing", and "best boat in the show" were music to our ears all weekend long.

Nala Topples Vineyard Race Record

Nala joined a formidable, seven-strong offshore multihull class in the Vineyard Race over the weekend. The remnants of Hurricane Harvey provided near perfect conditions for the fleet, who set out midday Friday prepared for a wild and (hopefully) record breaking ride.

HH commissing skipper Chris Bailet joined the Nala crew for the event - his full race report follows:

Winds in the mid-teens out of the N/NW. In the pre-start everyone was on port tack, jockeying for position under main and solent, ready to deploy their largest reaching sail. On Nala we had the R1 up and deployed before the gun, trying to hit the line with speed. Our timing was a bit off and we crossed a few seconds late, to windward of Tribe, and Arethusa above us. There wasn't much separation between the three boats for the first 10 miles, with the larger multis all playing the Connecticut shoreline. Fujin took a quick lead out front, but wasn't quite able to pull away. At one point we were able to roll over Tribe, but then they came up and were nearly able to run back over us. The wind was not as consistent on the high side of the course, but there was a bit more pressure. 

Tribe had an issue with their reacher and had to bear away to the center of the course while Nala and Arethusa tried to stay up near Connecticut finding the bigger gusts but also the light spots. Our forecast showed the wind going left; we didn't want to be stuck high and have to try to soak down towards the Buzzard Bay buoy. The plan was to run high with the R1 and peel to the A4 to run down to The Gut, where there would be less current than going through The Race, then round Plum island which would give us a closer angle to the mark. It was a bit more distance, but we wanted boat speed if conditions got lighter and went further left than forecasted. 

We had an incredible run down with the A4, ripping at 20+ knots. Coming through The Gut between Long Island and Plum Island, the call was to peel to the A5 and get a tighter angle to the mark. An issue with the bucket meant we needed to drop on the deck. It didn't quite go as planned and we put a hole in the A4 on the drop, leaving us without a running sail. 

A5 run to the mark with the wind going slightly left but dwindling, gave us a hot angle as all the other boats went rhum line through the with running sails. Fujin had found another gear and had a 20 mile lead on us, Tribe was 8 miles back and Arethusa was another 4 behind them. We rounded and got the R1 back up with the wind staying left for a tight reach back to Block. The wave state was challenging and we were a bit skeptical about the R1 strop and the shock load while launching off the waves with boat speed still in the med/high teens. We went to get the J1 up rounding Block and settle in for the upwind, but the shiv box fasteners mysteriously sheered when someone (yours truly) went on the wrong tack line (you try sorting a peel in that snake pit at night with a red head lamp!). We quickly deployed the solent and endured a slower upwind leg than we would have liked got us back through The Gut. Tribe started steadily closing the gap until we were back in the LIS and we were able to bear away, get the R1 out and starting pressing to the finish. Conditions were looking good for a strong finish, the wind was holding steady out of the North and we'd just made the flood. 

Maybe I spoke to soon... at this point the wind was starting to get lighter and going right. We could hardly soak with the R1 and Tribe was 12 miles back and gaining steadily. We were looking at 4 gybes to the finish while they had a VMG kite up. It was a painful morning, watching Tribe close the gap to just 3 miles as we tried to soak in a dying breeze. I think Fujin made it in before first light, just narrowly missing last call at the Yacht Club but absolutely crushing the course record by over 5 hours. In the end we finished the 238 mile course in 19 hours 28 minutes, beating the previous multihull course record, securing 2nd place in the Offshore Multihull class and finishing 4th overall out of 100+ boats. A fantastic regatta and a great result.

Minnehaha Cruises New England

We were fortunate to join owners Doug and Deb aboard HH55-01 Minnehaha earlier this month for a week long cruise in New England - the quintessential American yachting destination. We joined the boat in Sag Harbor and made our way to Martha's Vineyard, with stops in Greenport, Montauk, Block Island and Cuttyhunk along the way. Light winds prevailed, so the few times we were able to raise sails the sailing was calm and relaxing. The anchorages and quaint ports we visited were spectacular; we swam, paddleboarded, rode bikes, hiked, shopped and enjoyed beautiful meals together. In Cuttyhunk we crossed paths with the New York Yacht Club summer cruise, 150 of the club's members cruising together for a week to iconic New England destinations. Minnehaha's big sister, HH66-03 Nala, was among the boats participating, and owners and crew spent the evening together visiting one another's boats and getting acquainted over pain killers and sailing stories. We bid Minnehaha adieu in Martha's Vineyard, and Doug and Deb continued on to Nantucket. We'll catch up with Minnehaha again next month, when she makes her world debut at the Newport International Boat Show.

Fastnet Race 2017

3 DAYS, 3 HOURS, 3 MINUTES, 3 SECONDS

HH66-01 Team R-Six completed the Fastnet Race in 3 days, 3 hours, 3 minutes and 3 seconds! They took 2nd in the MOCRA class, loosing only to the 70 foot trimaran, Concise, which did an incredible job and finishing the race in only 42 hours! There were 364 boats overall competing in different classes.

As you can see from the video below, there was certainly no lack of action.

Flash is Ready to Depart

HH66-05 'Flash' commissioning and sea trials are officially over! She was hauled out last week and is now being prepared for delivery to the US and to her new owner.

Another huge congratulations to the HH team for their incredible efforts in building yet another stunning catamaran. Next time we see Flash, it will be Baltimore, MD!

HH55-02: Out of Paint Booth

HH55-02 left the paint booth this week, giving us our first look at the newly completed hulls and it's another great job from the HH paint team.

Every HH Catamaran launched to date has been striking, unique and visually distinct. HH66-01 and 02 owners both chose a clear coat carbon finish for their hulls (with 66-02's owner adding green dragon eye vinyls on the bow!) whilst HH66-03 left the yard with glittering hazelnut-gold hulls. The most recent 66 launch, HH66-05, sports a metallic blue paint job and might be the most eye popping launch so far.

For the HH55 series, both owners have chosen more classic looks, with HH55-01 opting for baby blue hulls and and now HH55-02 with her beautiful Pearl Grey finish.

NALA DAZZLES IN MIAMI AND CLAIMS VICTORY IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS

    HH Catamarans made its US debut in February at the   Strictly Sail Miami Show   with HH66-03 NALA. With her striking golden hulls and gorgeous luxury interior, NALA was the star of the show.  Following the show, NALA headed East for a shakedown sail to the Bahamas and then on to the USVI. Immediately after arriving in St. John NALA switched gears to prepare for the   St. Thomas International Regatta  . With North Sails' Cam Appleton, designer Gino Morrelli and commissioning skipper Chris Bailet joining the crew, NALA sailed with shrewdness, speed and consistency, scoring three firsts and a second and finishing in 1st Place Overall.  Next on the docket was the   BVI Spring Regatta  , billed as the heavyweight event of the season. NALA, with only a few weeks on the water, set out to prove her prowess on the racecourse once again. Led by North Sails president Kenny Read, NALA hoped to shake things up amongst a formidable fleet and give the veteran competitors a run for their money. Making the necessary adjustments after a few early missteps, NALA improved each day, chipping away at the elapsed time margins behind the fleet's toughest competitors. Ultimately the tenacity paid off, with NALA taking 2nd Place Overall.  After a blazing racing debut, NALA finally cooled the pace and took a bit of time to enjoy cruising in the VIs before eventually heading North to her Summer home in New England.

Just days after arriving in Antigua, the R-SIX Team turned the boat around in time to sail in the   RORC CARIBBEAN 600  , a grueling 600-mile blast around eleven Caribbean islands. A true testament to the durability, character and strength of boat and crew, R-SIX finished the race 3rd in class behind two purpose-built MOD70 racing trimarans, earning a place on the podium and a bid to participate in the Royal Ocean Racing Club's famous   Fastnet Race   later in the year.  R-SIX kept things rolling throughout the season, hitting many of the Caribbean circuit highlights. They took 2nd Place Overall at the legendary St.   Maarten Heineken Regatta  , and 3rd at   Les Voiles de St. Barths  . They wrapped up their Caribbean tour with Antigua Sailing Week, where heavier conditions favored the fully-kitted cruising cat allowing them to dominate the competition. After the first four days of racing only R-SIX remained unbeaten out of 150+ yachts, solidifying their   1st Place Overall   victory before even going into the final day of racing. HH66-05 Under going Sea Trials in Xiamen

Over eight years ago Hakes Marine in New Zealand started building a very special catamaran for a German client. It was called the SL33: 10m in length, weighing only 650kg with a mast over 18m tall. A bit insane in its power to weight ratio, the boat was designed and built for the light winds of Lake Constance, where the goal was to hull fly to victory on the regatta circuit in the typical 4kts of breeze.

The SL33 was one of many successful ventures between builder Paul Hakes and designer Gino Morrelli. At the time of construction Morrelli & Melvin were also contracted by Emirates Team New Zealand to design what would eventually become the very first flying AC72. Impressed by the SL33 project and recognizing it as a good training and development platform, ETNZ purchased two SL33s from Paul, with Luna Rossa following suit and purchasing one of their own. Using this new, lightweight yet robust platform, ETNZ began daggerboard development and eventually learnt how to foil on the SL33s. This technology and valuable experience was quickly applied to the AC72 that went on to shock the world when the ETNZ achieved full flight, setting a new standard for AC racing.

2014-2017 has seen a remarkable number of boats, both multihulls and now even monohulls, flying on foils with incredible speed. It’s great to reflect back to one of the foundations to flying multihulls and spectacular America’s Cup racing, the SL33. Today there are three SL33s still tearing it up around Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. Black Jack, the original SL33, still dominates the lake racing of Northern Europe.

Today we see Paul Hakes and Gino Morrelli teaming up again, this time on a slightly cushier project. HH Catamarans, the luxury, performance cruising cat line, has commanded the niche market, and considering the shared pedigree: carbon construction, curved C-boards, T-rudders, push button sail controls; and luxuriously comfortable platform, it’s easy to see why. HH Catamarans’ most recent launch, HH66-05, is currently in the midst of sea trials. The electric blue hull is already hitting speeds in the high teens in the light Xiamen sea breeze, with plenty left in the tank. With a forward helm inside the salon and ORMA style bucket seats and tillers aft, HH66-05 provides the best of both worlds for the serious dual purpose sailor. Loaded with all the amenities for cruising and entertaining in style, the HH66 will be the perfect platform for spectating the next Cup in Auckland in 2021... Want to get in on the fun? FLASH Dazzles in Red, White and Blue

Happy Independence Day, U.S.A.! We celebrated onboard HH66-05 FLASH today with her American owner. FLASH dazzled under a striking red spinnaker and hit 15kts on a reach in the light summertime sea breeze. FLASH will make her U.S. debut at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis this fall, schedule your visit onboard with a member of our sales team today! 

HH66-05: Sea Trials Commence!

66-05 FLASH began sea trials Thursday. The latest HH66 sports a central helm, flush cabin top, and bonus bucket seat and tiller steering aft. Thursday's objective was to check rigging, mainsail and solent. In 15kts of breeze FLASH easily glided along at 12kts upwind and 15kts on a reach. The next sea trial is set for Sunday, with breezier conditions expected. Sunday's plan is to test the reacher and the tiller steering - stay tuned!

HH Catamarans HH66-05 'Flash' launched today in Xiamen.

The flush bimini, forward helm and working cockpit and the bonus bucket seats and tillers may just make this the slickest 66 yet.

Stepping Up

We stepped the mast on HH66-05 'Flash' last Friday. Launch day is tomorrow and sea trials will begin this week. The first sailing photos of Flash are coming very soon.

Minnehaha

HH55-01 'Minnehaha' arrived in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida just over two weeks ago. She is the first of the HH Catamarans to sport a forward, interior helm. She is a gorgeous yacht and an absolute pleasure under sail.

Here is a short video compilation of Minnehaha with her sails up, catching the breeze and looking good. 

Big thanks and best wishes to owners Doug and Deb for letting us join them aboard and record the re-commissioning process. We wish them all the best as they set out on their first offshore adventure.

Flash makes a Splash!

HH66-05 hit the test pool today under a gorgeous blue sky. 'Flash' will now begin final systems checks and fitouts before she is prepped for sea trials. Mast and rigging will go up later this month.

Year One

HH Catamarans Celebrates First Year

As the relative newcomer in the performance cruising cat segment, all eyes have been on HH Catamarans. The four year old venture, a partnership between esteemed Kiwi boatbuilder Paul Hakes and visionary Taiwanese industrialist Hudson Wang, set out to build the world’s finest cutting-edge, bespoke, performance cruising catamarans, and ensure a premier ownership experience by providing an unparalleled level of support and service.

HH Catamarans delivered their first launch, HH66-01 R-SIX, to her owner in Valencia last June. The Morrelli & Melvin designed HH Supercat set the pace in her first six months, sailing from Valencia to Cyprus and many points in-between. She wowed industry insiders and show goers when she made her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September, then sailed directly to Mallorca to compete in the first-ever Multihull Cup Regatta. Sailing against a competitive class of her more seasoned peers, including Gunboat 66s Coco de Mer and Slim and Nigel Irens custom 78’ Allegra, R-SIX pounced on the challenge, stunning the fleet and finishing in 1st Place Overall.

In January, R-SIX crossed the Atlantic, arriving in Antigua just in time to immediately switch gears and compete in the prestigious Caribbean 600. The multi day regatta challenged competitors with extremely light conditions for much of the 600 mile course. With gourmet food, entertainment and plush accommodations, R-SIX raced in comfort and finished in 3rd place behind two MOD70s. In March R-SIX was joined in the Caribbean by her sister ship, the newly launched HH66-03 Nala. The two went on to tag team the Caribbean race circuit, one or the other participating in the five high profile events of the season.

R-SIX sailed strong in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, defeating all three Gunboat 60s in class and coming in 2nd Overall behind the zippy, 7-ton, custom Bieker 53 Fujin. Next it was Nala’s turn to shine; she made her racing debut at the St.Thomas International Regatta just days after arriving in the USVI from the Bahamas. STIR proved to be an exciting an event, with big breeze testing the fleet and providing Nala the chance to shine. Boat and crew held up strong and validated the HH reliability factor - sustaining zero breakages over three days of intense racing. Nala finished with 1st Place in three out of five races and 1st Overall, defeating the previously unbeaten Fujin.

The next event presented a new challenge; the BVI Spring Regatta was billed as the matchup of the season, with veteran Gunboats Elvis and H2O meeting for the first time and Nala, with only a few weeks on the water, and hoping to shake things up a bit. Shake things up she did, giving both boats a run for their money throughout the weekend. Nala endured a few missteps early on, but made adjustments and improved each day,  outperforming three of the five Gunboats in every race and chipping away at the elapsed time margins behind the two titans. Ultimately the tenacity paid off, with Nala taking 2nd Place Overall. R-SIX returned to do battle at Les Voiles de St.Barths. Light air prevailed throughout the regatta and R-SIX suffered a minor equipment failure making it impossible to use their asymmetrical headsail for much of the event. The team persevered and managed to sail well enough to secure a spot on the podium in 3rd Place Overall. Though not their best result, Les Voiles proved to be good practice for R-SIX for their next and final event of the season, Antigua Sailing Week. Mast lock issue resolved, the team attacked with full force, and after four days of competition only R-SIX remained unbeaten out of 150 yachts. Boat Captain Robert Janecki summed up the experience, "After many years of sailing racing catamarans, it is refreshing to see that there are things that can still surprise me. In Antigua we managed to maintain boat speed between 12-14 kts upwind, sailing against the waves! Quite amazing for a pleasure catamaran. What is more… the boat is built in such a way that it forgives us some of our mistakes during short and dynamic racing." Taking line honors in six out of seven races and wrapping up 1st Place Overall, R-SIX closed out their Caribbean season on a high note and immediately set out across the Atlantic once more, arriving in the Azores a quick ten days later.

With R-SIX and Nala providing ample proof of concept in the Caribbean, HH Catamarans pressed ahead with production, launching the first of the new HH55s in February. After a month of testing and fine-tuning, HH55-01 Minnehaha departed Xiamen bound for the USA. The boat was delivered into the waiting arms of her owner in Ft. Lauderdale just last week, and is currently undergoing recommissioning and some promotional sailing before setting off to the Bahamas for the owners’ first cruise in June. She’ll make her way up the East coast this summer, arriving in Annapolis in time to make her world debut at the United States Sailboat Show in October.

Production in Xiamen continues with three HH66s and three HH55s currently in progress. The next HH66, Flash, is slated to launch this summer, and features a newly styled cabin top, forward helm station and aft tillers with complete finger touch sail controls. Further expanding their product line, HH recently announced a new 48’ model. The HH48 will maintain the pedigree of the larger HH models, while incorporating simpler, easier-managed systems and layout for short-handed sailing. The newest addition to the HH Catamarans line is likely to encourage new entrants to the market, further expanding the incredible features of fast and safe blue water cruising. Like the HH55 and 66, the 48 will be a big volume boat, capable of taking a large payload for extended cruising with family and toys without diminishing performance or safety. The HH48 as a base boat will be offered at less than $1M, and at such a great starting price the growth of this bold new venture and brand is set for substantive growth.

HH55-01 'Minnehaha' Christened in Florida

On Saturday, May 27th, we christened HH55-01 'Minnehaha' with the owners, Doug and Deb, Gino and Mark from Morrelli & Melvin, and a few friends. It was Doug's birthday as well, making the day that much more special. Congratulations to all on a spectacular boat, and best wishes to Doug and Deb as they prepare to set sail on a great new adventure!
